Weesp, The Netherlands, October 4, 2017 – From January, 2018, onwards Smit & zoon will sell its Functional Oils business to IQI B.V., a supplier of pet food ingredients such as fish meal and fish oil.
The Functional Oils activities are no longer a focus segment for Smit & zoon that wishes to expand its leading position in the development and production of chemicals primarily used in the manufacturing and finishing of leather.
After an extensive two day audit, Smit & zoon was once again approved as a sustainable supplier according to the IFFO RS standards. We proved to have great traceability procedures in place and will receive our new certificate once the current one, valid until July 2017, reaches its end date.
The next step in CSR, Smit & zoon successfully completed the SMETA audit
As a part of our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy, Smit & zoon wants to provide a long term positive contribution to society. To achieve this goal, one of our actions has been to endorse the ETI Base Code. Our objective is to follow its principles and to encourage other to do so as well.
The Omega-3 content has been decreasing leading to lower intake than you might think
As farmed salmon becomes a regular feature in our diets, it is important to understand its nutritional benefits. Research published by MVO stated that even though salmon is still an excellent source of EPA and DHA, the content of these long chain Omega-3 fatty acids in the salmon tissue has nearly halved over the past 5 years. This means that double the portion should be taken in order to reach the same intake of the recommended EPA and DHA.
The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED), in which Smit Functional Oils is represented in the board of directors, has presented a new consumer infographic to showcase the differences between ALA, EPA and DHA and underline the importance of direct consumption of EPA and DHA.
